Isola delle Femmine is a small island located 800 m off the northern coast of Sicily. It measures 575 x 325 m and has been a natural reserve since 1997. For centuries, it was privately owned by an aristocratic family from Capaci (PA). The name comes from the Arabic word 'fimi', which means 'out', and it later evolved into the Sicilian 'fimini', before being Italianized to 'femmine'. This transformation of the name is likely due to phonetic reasons, and the meaning changed through a mistake in translation.

The name has led to many legends about women; in most of them, they were confined to the island due to some misbehavior. One day, we discovered that the island was for sale. Initially, the broker's agency was asking for 3,500,000 euros. We thought it would be a good idea to gather 350,000 women to contribute 10 euros each. Therefore, we formed a non-profit association and decided to buy the island.

At the beginning of the process, there were four of us: Valentina, who had the original idea, Claudia, Stefania, and Marcela. We met in Palermo and share a love for art, trans-feminism, and respect for Mother Nature. Purchasing the island is an utopian action and a work of art. Maybe.

In 2025, the agency is asking for 1,650,000 euros for the island. The group of women has changed and grown, and we are still dreaming of buying the island. Stay tuned!
