The project stems from a reflection on monuments and anti-monuments. It begins with an encounter with a piece of wood. A piece of trunk and the roots of an old pine tree on the side of the Royal Palace in Piazza Indipendenza in Palermo. A piece of wood is a potential for a story, for a fire, for an animal's nest, for a game table, for a work of art, for a monument. It is an empty place that calls for a definition because it is a place in waiting. It is no longer defined by being a decorative maritime pine. It is a broken and dead tree, so it is probably no longer even a tree. In English, which is a more practical language than Italian, things that lose life often change name as well (corpse/body, cow/beef, pig/pork). It is an unresolved object/space for the violence that was necessary to bring down the great tree, for the sense of danger and instability it has left, for the decontextualization of the roots that look upwards, for the shadow that is missing. The idea is to hold one or more collective consultations with outstanding figures chosen for various reasons and to decide how and whether to intervene on this potential."
